Posidi

Posidi Kassandra Halkidiki Greece

Posidi, Kassandra Halkidiki

Posidi is the beach of Kallandra and it is well known. The most famous characteristic of the region is its lighthouse, which is built for many years.

The camping of GNTO, the countless beach-bars, the local meat, the fires on its endless beach, make Posidi a unique piece of the Greek land that remains unforgettable to its visitor.

The lighthouse

Built in 1864, the lighthouse stood very near to the water in its early days but now the sea has backed away. The sand stretch was formed later from piling up of sediments. This colonial styled lighthouse is still in use today and has a small flowery garden besides it, adding to its beauty.

Mendi

The area is tightly associated with the existence of “Mendi”. The place-names of the country of Mendi were kept unchanged, like the one of its beach that is still called Posidio, an ionic expression of Posidonion, as Thucydides names it in the 5th ce BC. Four km west is the temple of Poseidon, built on a stripe of land near the sea.

Polichrono Kassandra Halkidiki

Polichrono Kassandra Halkidiki

The history of Polichrono begins in 650 b.c when the Eretrieis came to the Peninsula of Kassandra and established their colony in Neapoli, which despite all the barbarian invasions managed to survive until 540 a.c. when it was totally ruined by the Huns.
In the 11th century cattle-breeders farmers gathered in this area and built “Polyhro” village, which name was given due to the large number of flowers that the region had.

The village lived under the Turkish oppression and during the revolution of 1821 it was put to fire and completely ruined by the Turks.

Few years later some of the few survivors who had run away and managed to survive, came back and rebuilt the village, which due to its verbal corruption was named Polyhrono. Today is one of the most famous places of Halkidiki and it attracts thousands of visitors every year. It well known for its long beach, which lies along the settlement.

Nea Skioni

Nea Skioni, Kassandra Halkidiki

Nea Skioni was established in 1918 where fisherman huts existed. In 1930, the old village “Tsaprani”, which was located in the mountain of Kassandra, was abandoned.

The new village was named after the ancient Skioni, which was the oldest colony. According to Thoukidides it was built after the Trojan War by the Pellineis of Peloponnese, who located there to spend the winter.

After the Medic wars, it became member of the Athenian Alley. However, during the Peloponnesian war it joined the Lakedaimonious and then the Athenians full of rage wanted to punish Skioni thus they slaughtered all the man, who were 18 years old and over. Then, refuges Plataieis settled in the deserted town.Ancient Skioni flourished during the Roman years but we do not know when exactly it was completely ruined.

Today New Skioni lies around its charming harbor where the sun meets with the sea and serenity dominates everywhere as the fishing boats return at the end of the day, bringing fresh fish, which you can taste in all the fish taverns of the village.

Nea Fokea

Nea Fokea Kassandra Halkidiki

Nea Fokea, Kassandra Halkidiki

The beautiful seaside village of Fokea, with the well-preserved Byzantine tower of St. Paul, the picturesque small port, the beautiful beaches and the clean sea, attract every year thousands of tourists of every age.
It has 1500 habitants who during the summer come up to 10.000 and it’s only 78 km away from Thessaloniki. Is one of the youngest villages of Kassandra as it was established in 1922 by Near East refugees. Although it’s a new village, it has a long history. The region is populated by the ancient years.

During the historic years towns developed: Sani, colony of Eretrians, built on the west beach and Skithai built on the Toronaios gulf. During the 14th century many “metoxia” (monasteries) of Mount Athos existed. In 1407 Ioannis Palaiologos gave the region today’s village to the Monastery of St. Paul of Mount Athos. The Byzantine Tower was probably built at that time. In 1821 in that tower the leader of the revolution Emmanuel Papas had his headquarters.

The fair of the Apostle Peter and Paul in 29-30 June is really interesting. The mass takes place in the church of St. Paul, which is located at the entrance of the village. It is about a chiseled Macedonian tomb, in the rocky area of the village, which is really admirable, and according to the traditions Apostle Paul went there to protect himself from his persecutors. Inside the tomb there are many rooms and an underground passage that leads to the holy water.

The village has a remarkable tourist infrastructure, which includes luxury hotels, rooms to let, restaurants, taverns, fish taverns, café, patisseries, e.t.c. Those who like nightlife, apart from the bars the village has, they can choose among numerous nightclubs with live music.

During the summer in the Tower many cultural events take place, within the framework of the Kassandra Festival.

Afitos (Athitos), Kassandra Halkidiki

Afytis, Afetos, Athitos

“Places where with the moon’s forget flower and with the sun’s juices nourished me, today I dream of you” Sun the First
Odysseas Elytis

Afitos (Athitos) of the painters, Athitos of the men who love and dream of it. Its characteristic location with a view to the Toronaios Gulf, the architecture of its houses, its benevolent and often “archaic” habitants. Athitos, is the third village in row after the isthmus of Potidaia, which lies there from about 3,000 b.c.Ancient Afytis was an important town of Pallini and it is mentioned by the ancient writers (Herodotus, Thoukidis, Xenofon, Aristotle, Pafsanias, Stravonas e.t.c). The alter of Xenofon (8th century b.c) and the temple of Ammon Zeus (4th century b.c.) contributed in making Athitos famous during these years. A prosperous town during the ancient and classic years.

Afitos (Athitos) had a dynamic participation in the revolution of the 1821 however with a lot of victims. After the Chaos the habitants of the village were scattered in various safer regions. Around 1827 the fugitives came back and Athitos was for many years the largest village of Kassandra. In the middle of the 19th century a great constructive activity was presented. In 1859 the church of St. Dimitrios was built. The church was built in the central square of the village, it was a wooden roof basilica with a dome and it was considered as the village’s “ornament”.The visitor should look at the unique architecture of the church, the old images and the stone anaglyph in the exterior part of the south wall. It is also worth visiting the big chapels that followed it. (1867 St. George, 1885 Assumption –St. Athanasios, St. Nikolaos).

The old stone-built houses with the inscriptions and the stone anaglyphs are very characteristic of Athitos. (1860 Katasanis, 1864 Papavasileiou, 1876 Galani, 1889 Aletras, 1898 Athanasiadis, e.t.c). The house of Aletras in the central square has been converted into a folklore museum. If you take the road from the square you will be leaded to Brahos, the balcony of the village, where you gaze Toronaios Gulf, Sithonia and Kassandra peninsulas. Then you go on Koutsomylos in the windswept acropolis of Athitos with a panoramic view. Athitos is efficient in rented rooms, hotels, taverns and restaurants with good food, coffee shops and bars. The visitor when walking in the stone paved alleys of Athitos, following Elytis in his Aegean walkabout can enjoy the calmness of the sea, in Barkes, in Pounta, in Liosi, in Dafni. Many cultural events take place during the summer. All these are organized by the habitants of Athitos and thus make Athitos a reference point for the tourist of Halkidiki.
