What to Expect Inside the Museum

It is important to note that the actual physical artifacts excavated from the site (ceramics, statues, and jewelry) are housed in the nearby Archaeological Museum of Polygyros. Instead, this museum uses state-of-the-art audiovisual material, 3D reconstructions, and augmented reality to prepare you for your walk through the ancient ruins. Inside, visitors will learn about:

• The Hippodamian Plan: Discover how Ancient Olynthos was a pioneer in urban planning. You will see digital models of the city’s perfect grid system, featuring wide avenues and square housing blocks.
• The Olynthian House: Learn about the domestic life of ancient Greeks. Visuals explain how houses were built with river stones, inner courtyards, and some of the oldest known pebble mosaic floors in Greece.
• The Excavation History: Watch fascinating short films detailing the massive excavation efforts that began in 1928 by David M. Robinson and continued through the 1990s.
