The Legendary Shipwrights of Ierissos, Halkidiki

Keeping the Greek tradition of shipbuilding alive for hundreds of years

People from Ierissos, a coastal town in Halkidiki, Northern Greece, are known for being very good in traditional Greek shipbuilding. This historic craft, which has its roots in maritime history, has been passed down from generation to generation, keeping one of Greece’s oldest and most respected professions alive.

The Oldest Shipyards in Greece

The quays of Ierissos are thought to be among of the oldest shipyards in Greece. They used to be full of the sound of hammers and the smell of fresh pine. These shipyards have made a lot of wooden boats, built by talented local craftsmen who knew the sea better than most.

Dimitrios S. Papasterianos, who is frequently called the father of traditional Greek shipbuilding, was one of the most famous shipwrights. His work was known all over Europe, and his boats even acted as scouts for the Greek Navy. His most famous work was an 8-oared boat called “Aegeas.” It was one of many great works he made.

From Ierissos to the rest of Greece

The naval architecture that thrived in Ierissos didn’t stay in Halkidiki. It spread all over Greece, affecting shipyards at Piraeus, Kavala, Thessaloniki, Nea Moudania, and even the Greek islands.

For hundreds of years, this was a family custom. Fathers taught their sons how to build ships, sometimes while they were very young. A lot of kids left school when they were about 10 years old to start their apprenticeships, where they learned by working long hours with their elders.

A Living Legacy of the Greek Maritime Spirit

The shipbuilders of Ierissos are still a symbol of Greece’s maritime legacy, which is a mix of skill, tradition, and love of the sea. Their heritage continues to inspire new generations and keep the spirit of Greek seafaring culture alive in Halkidiki and beyond.
