Halkidiki has a long tradition in wine production dating back to antiquity. The ancient cities of Akanthos (today’s Ierissos) and Afytis were especially famous for their wines, which were widely traded in ancient Greece.
In Stagira, the birthplace of Aristotle, tradition holds that the first organized vineyard pattern was planted.
Today, vineyards are cultivated mainly in central and northern Halkidiki, as well as in Sithonia and Mount Athos, continuing a winemaking heritage that blends history with modern production.

Domaine Porto Carras
Its wines were the ancestors of the modern wines from the Slopes of Mount Meliton region, which are now recognized as wines with Protected Designation of Origin (P.D.O.) “Meliton Slopes.” They were famous throughout the world under the place names Toroni, Acanthus, and Olympus and were mentioned in numerous ancient texts. Around 1965, Yannis Karras came up with the concept of revitalizing the area, deciding to capitalize on the priceless gift that nature had generously given to the distinctive slopes of Meliton.

Milopotamos, Mt Athos
Because of its regular and essential rainfall, Athos is a magnet. The sea encircles it, and in the summer the vineyards are bathed by the rising sun. These elements work together to provide the ideal circumstances for a great grape harvest, especially when combined with the ecological attention that the vines receive.
The monks’ endeavor is distinctive since they were the first Athos communities to manufacture and bottle wines, which are available in Greek and international markets in addition to Mount Athos.

Akrathos Newland Winery
Are you aware of why we adorn our vineyards with roses? Due of their sensitivity, roses will show symptoms of disease or stress much before grapevines do. They act as a sneak peek at what we might have to accomplish in the vines in this fashion.
