The name Parthenonas is mentioned in documents from 10th century but there is no much information about the village itself and its role in the past. In 1970 the site was rediscovered and called
The abandoned village of Sithonia since only abandoned and ruined houses were found in it.
The asphalt road leads you to Parthenonas from Neos Marmaras. The road is 5-6 kilometers (somewhat less than 4 miles) long. It passes through olive groves and taller trees at the somewhat higher altitude.
If you are comfortable with biking or walking along the road, take the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the area in full. On foot, you shouldn’t need more than 2 hours to reach the village from the resort of Neos Marmaras.
The village of Parthenonas sits at the altitude of 350 meters (1150 feet) on the western side of Mount Itamos.
Hence, it overlooks the Toroneos Gulf and Kelyfos Island. The island is also known as Turtle Island because of the characteristic shape.
Therefore, you can come here to enjoy marvelous sunsets with a cup of Tsipouro, or Ouzo – another traditional drink of Greece, at a tavern or a café. More so, there is a gift shop in the village selling jewelry, ceramics and other handmade goods.
